From the madhouse of St. Holmes must retrace the last months of Vincent’s life, testing his mettle against men like the brutal Paul Gauguin and the secretive Toulouse-Lautrec, all the while searching for the girl Olympia, whom Vincent named with his dying breath. Who could profit from Vincent’s death? How is the murder entwined with his own forgery investigation? And he’s bulldog-determined to discover why a penniless painter who harmed no one had to be killed–and who killed him. Not for the faint of heart, but so truthful in its description of the combat infantryman's world. They were there to do a job and get out alive, and that's how most soldiers feel. ![]() And yet, Fraser and his comrades were not blood-thirsty few soldiers are, and those that are, are usually poor soldiers. His battalion had spent months being shot at and losing men in the jungle, by Japanese who melted away in the forest, and finally they were fighting in the open he tells of his happiness in being able to finally see and shoot the enemy. Fraser is brutally honest, as when he describes being in the last battle of the war, in which, finally, the invisible enemy became visible. ![]() The strange decisions the soldiers had to make, like whether to shoot Japanese soldiers while sleeping, or to wake them up first, are the reality of the grunt's world (they decided it didn't matter much, one way or the other). Having served in infantry units myself, I felt the truth of this account in my bones. Fraser described his service in General Slim's Army in Burma as the "last echo of Kipling's world", and that is not so far off the mark. If you are not planning to read it, stop too, I encourage you to do so. If you haven't read yet "Hopscotch" and you are thinking of doing it, stop here, do not continue reading. With this way of reading, what Julio Cortázar intended was represent the chaos, the chance of life and the indisputable relationship between what is created and the hand of the artist who makes it. His loose sequence structure allows different readings, and therefore different interpretations. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Hopscotch", published in 1963, is a fundamental reference of Hispanic American literature. Nominated for the Women’s Prize alongside such hyped heavyweights as Hilary Mantel’s Bring Up The Bodies and Zadie Smith’s NW, Kingsolver’s eighth novel for large parts of its not-inconsiderable length more than competes in that much-heralded company: indeed, at times it is more humane and gentle than Mantel, more unified and singular than Smith. ![]() Like its protagonist Dellarobia, a bored Appalachian housewife and mother of two who has grown frustrated and unfulfilled by the narrow experiences offered to her by past choices and present obligations, Barbara Kingsolver’s Flight Behaviour undergoes something of an identity crisis. ![]() |
